While at the CEDIA Convention in Dallas TX this past month we were blown away at the SurgeX booth.  They were demonstrating their Surge Elimination products and actually blowing up MOV’s in competitive product to show the effects of what can happen to MOV’s and competitive products when a surge happens.  They are the only company that offers this type of protection its truly a best in class product.  Below is some information on SurgeX.  We feel very strong about recommending the SurgeX products and how they protect against a surge or lighting strike we surly will be adding their advance series mode products in our next home theater installation.

Perhaps the best way to appreciate the difference between SurgeX and other surge protectors is to look at what happens to a piece of connected equipment during a surge.

Under optimum conditions, the electrical equipment in your house sees 120 volts on the hot and neutral lines and zero volts on the ground line.

Surge voltage is not eliminated but is re-directed to neutral and ground.  The ground wire, which is the reference point for every electrical device in your home, is now contaminated.  (Exact voltage numbers are approximate, but the fact that they are re-distributed to neutral and ground is correct and verifiable.  The fact that they are re-distributed at all is the major problem. The three levels of protection defined in the UL rating of MOVs are 330V, 400V and 500V, the lower the better.  So in best cases, your connected equipment sees at least 330V.

MOVs have many well documented deficiencies

  • MOVs are designed to allow a certain amount of “let through voltage” (usually 330V) to reach connected equipment.  Not a knock out punch maybe, but a well landed jab.
  • MOVs contaminate the ground in your home, potentially damaging or locking up all connected electrical devices.
  • MOVs wear out over time (degrade with every surge) and need to be replaced before they fail.
  • There is no practical way to know how much degradation has taken place in an MOV, or how much surge life it has left
